NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A large winter storm will bring ice, thunderstorms and snow to Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories on Sunday morning for northern counties in Middle Tennessee and all of Southern Kentucky.
These winter weather advisories are for the freezing rain that will fall on Sunday morning.
Remember, freezing rain falls as a liquid and freezes on contact. This causes extremely slippery roads and, if enough falls, could lead to power outages. The main threat will be icy roads with scattered power outages possible in parts of Kentucky.
There will be a several-hour window on Sunday morning when roads will be icy. When temperatures rise above freezing in the afternoon, the freezing rain will change over to regular rain and the roads will go from icy to wet. Below is the latest hour-by-hour timing.
After the cold front moves through on Sunday night, temperatures will quickly drop back below freezing. This will change the rain to snow and cause wet roads to freeze. This will make for dangerous road conditions on Monday.
We won’t see a ton of snow, but much of the area will see a dusting to half an inch with higher amounts possible on the Cumberland Plateau.
Behind this winter storm will be the coldest temperatures of the season. Most of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky won’t get above freezing all week.
