NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has encouraged a “voluntary reduction in power use” due to extremely cold temperatures.
A TVA spokesperson told News 2 the power curtailment would be Thursday, Feb. 20 and Friday, Feb. 21 from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. The effort is meant to reduce both strain on the power grid and save money on energy bills.
Additionally, the spokesperson provided some advice for reducing energy usage, including:
- Setting your thermostat between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, adding that each degree lowered can save as much as three percent on a monthly energy bill
- Reducing energy use during peak times by turning off non-essential apppliances
- Postponing hot water use and adjusting water heater temperatures
- Ensuring window coverings on the sunny side of your home are open during peak times
- Unplugging unused devices
- Sealing gaps around windows and doors to keep cold air from entering
Nashville Electric Service also provided some similar advice on social media, echoing the TVA’s suggested use curtailment.
