NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — There is a 24-hour window where love and celebrations coincide with a chilling statistic.
The YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee found the state ranks 7th overall in the nation when it comes to the number of women killed by men. During this time of year, that number has the potential to increase.

As the clock ticks towards the New Year, a grim reality is often shadowed by celebrations.
“Those who understand the cycle of domestic violence understand there are good times and there are bad times,” President and CEO of the YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee, Sharon Roberson, told News 2.
The YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee works to empower domestic violence survivors and offer them safety and resources to leave their abuser. According to the YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee, the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) responds to a domestic violence call every 20 minutes.
However, during this time of transition and celebration, there can be built-up emotions.
“You’re thinking this is a positive thing, but often, there is an escalation of violence because there’s a lot of control associated with holidays,” Roberson explained.
The holidays can often be triggering, forcing people under one roof for longer periods of time. This is why the National Domestic Violence Hotline experiences a high call volume during this time of year.
“Don’t give up on your loved ones. Be there when they need you — not to judge them because you may be the person they reach out to when they make the decision,” Roberson said. “It’s very important that they have to make their own decisions to leave their abusive relationship.”
It’s become so prevalent that along with the YWCA, Nashville’s Office of Family Safety released several videos over the holidays highlighting just how often this type of crime happens.
“Here in Nashville about 50% of all violent crimes are domestic violence related,” said a woman in one video. “First what’s really important for people to know, is just how common domestic violence is.”
The YWCA offers a 24-hour crisis and support helpline. You can call the Helpline at 800-334-4628, or text 615-983-5170. The Office of Family Safety is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Family Safety Center is also open 24/7 for Order of Protection, their number is 615-880-1100.
