HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities in Hendersonville have arrested two men from Texas who are now being investigated by at least half a dozen law enforcement agencies in Middle Tennessee.
Loss prevention officers reportedly spotted the men at a Hendersonville Walmart on Feb. 21 acting suspiciously, trying to charge money to gift cards, and using multiple credit cards —many of which were declined.
The Hendersonville Police Department responded to the store’s parking lot to catch the duo before they could leave. Police said one of the men—identified as 31-year-old Korin Moffett—was stopped as he exited the store.
As seen on video, Moffett’s partner—42-year-old Brantley White—pulled into a parking spot before backing between two squad cars. For the next few minutes, video captured White drive the grey Ford Explorer around the mall and behind businesses, refusing to pull over for police.
The tires are later seen coming off the SUV, which turned a corner and slid, resulting in the rims throwing sparks on the asphalt.
Dashcam video obtained by News 2 showed the moments the SUV pulled behind a tattoo parlor, where White bailed from the rolling vehicle.
White was reportedly captured and brought back to a squad car after being chased by officers.
“These guys were obviously not from around here and had zero idea of where they were at,” Lt. Chris Gagnon told News 2. “Fortunately, it was late at night so there wasn’t much pedestrian traffic, but they were driving really fast and were on rims at one point, so very dangerous and putting the public at risk.”
According to investigators, the duo were in possession of 32 stolen credit cards and 14 gifts cards, which had been used to launder money from the credit cards, when they were arrested.
In addition to the stolen cards, Hendersonville police said they also found two fake IDs.
“This is a known scam where people break into vehicles and utilize those credit cards to purchase gift cards, essentially laundering the money out of these victim’s accounts,” said Gagnon.
Moffett and White were taken to the Sumner County Jail on the following charges:
Korin Moffett: Possession of stolen property over $1,000, attempted theft of property under $1,000, money laundering and identity theft trafficking
Bartley White: Felony evading by motor vehicle, simple possession of schedule VI substance, criminal responsibility to commit money laundering and criminal responsibility to commit identity theft trafficking
Officials added that the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Metro Nashville Airport Authority, and several other agencies have warrants out for the men for similar crimes.
