NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Charges have been brought against a man in connection with a shooting and rollover crash in the Napier area that sent one person to the hospital over the weekend.
According to court documents, George Carter, 48, was arrested Monday in South Nashville after leading police on a helicopter pursuit.
Sunday around 3 a.m., authorities received a report of gunshots ringing out just before a crash occurred at Lafayette Street and Lincoln Street. A second caller reported that they witnessed a person approach a Jeep Wrangler and demand money before three shots rang off.
When officers arrived, they discovered a Jeep Wrangler that crashed near a fence and a black Toyota Highlander flipped on its roof in the middle of the roadway. Inside the Jeep, officers found a man suffering several gunshot wounds.
The man was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he received treatment for gunshot wounds to the upper parts of both arms. The victim told officers that a man — later identified as Carter — exited a silver Dodge Avenger and approached the Jeep with a gun pointed at him. Carter allegedly demanded money he claimed was owed to him before opening fire on the victim.
According to reports, the incident was captured on surveillance video from a housing complex. The video showed the victim’s Jeep approaching the intersection when Carter exited the Dodge and walked toward the victim with his arms stretched in front of him. The Jeep then sped forward and struck the black Toyota. Investigators later determined the Toyota was not involved in the shooting.
Immediately after the crash, Carter allegedly got back into his vehicle and fled.
During a search of the crime scene, three shell casings were found at the intersection where Carter was standing in the surveillance footage.
According to Metro police, investigators arrested Carter on Jan. 20 after locating a vehicle matching the Dodge’s description while surveying the area of Lincoln Street and Lafayette Street. When officers attempted a traffic stop, Carter began driving at high speeds, running red lights and into oncoming traffic, reports said. He was taken into custody after a pursuit that ended on East Thompson Lane. During a search, officials found narcotics and a pistol holster, but no pistol.
Carter was identified by the victim in a photo line-up of six individuals. It was detailed in court documents that he was previously convicted of 11 felonies in Tennessee and was out on bond at the time of the shooting. He is detained in Metro jail on a $1,226,000 bond.
