NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Our latest storm brought everything but the kitchen sink to middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky!
The powerful storm brought heavy snow and blizzard conditions to the Midwest and Great Plains. Some locations in Kentucky saw an ice storm, and severe thunderstorms in the deep south.
Here in our area, we saw a little bit of everything!
Early on Sunday morning, sleet and freezing rain fell in areas along and north of Interstate 40. The Nashville Metro area didn’t see any impacts from it, but there were a lot of great viewer pictures of ice-covered trees in other parts of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.
On Sunday afternoon, the temperatures warmed into the 40s and low 50s and rain and thunderstorms impacted the region. At one point, we had widespread lightning.
Those thunderstorms were along a cold front. Behind the front, the temperatures dropped like a rock. The temperature in Nashville went from 55° at midnight Sunday to 30° by 8 a.m. Monday.
Once the temperature dropped below freezing, the rain showers changed to snow showers. Most of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky saw a dusting of snow.
What’s going to happen next?
Arctic air flows in behind this storm. It looks like temperatures will remain below-freezing for the rest of the week. Morning temperatures will be in the single digits and teens and the wind chill will be even colder.
Our next weathermaker will arrive on Friday, Jan. 1. This system will give us our first good chance of measurable snow across all of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. This is something News 2 will be tracking closely over the next few days.
