NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A group of masked, armed people breaking into cars was caught on South Nashville security footage. Police are still still searching for the suspects.
Alarming footage showed several people with guns jumping out of a sedan. Three stayed on the lookout while another suspect entered the car from the already-broken sunroof.
“These are not just amateurs,” Metro Councilmember Jeremy Huffman told News 2. “These are organized criminals. They had lookouts for each other to ensure that no one could come and disturb what they were doing.”
Police said in a social media post about the car break-in if you see this in your neighborhood, don’t approach. Call 911. Huffman agreed.
“It would have been extremely dangerous for John Q. Citizen to come outside and notice that their car’s being broken into,” Huffman said.
Huffman believes license plate recognition (LPR) technology could help catch criminals before they act again.
“They’re not getting caught. They realize that there are no repercussions at this moment for them, so why wouldn’t they?” Huffman said. “There are no eyes on them, essentially.”
This isn’t the first time Huffman has spoken out about the need for LPR technology in Nashville, adding it could also help with problems like street racing.
Police say in the aftermath of car break-in, check security footage because that can help investigators solve the crime.
If you know the suspects shown in the surveillance video, you are asked to call the Metro Nashville Police Department at 615-742-7463.
