FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new emergency vehicle preemption software installed in traffic signals across Franklin and Brentwood allows firefighters to respond to calls about 20 seconds faster, according to the Franklin Fire Department (FFD).
“If somebody’s in cardiac arrest or we have a major fire, seconds really do matter,” FFD fire captain Clay Mackey said.
Mackey said the tool is more advanced than the existing systems used by most fire departments.
“Old technology really was analog,” Mackey added. “Your vehicle would just emit a signal — and any signal that was within the perimeter of that — the truck would preempt.”
Mackey explained the new system can connect with Dispatch, log the route the engine will take to get to the scene and turn traffic signals green about 30 seconds away.
“It helps us alleviate the stress level of the crew [and] keep them safe,” Mackey said. “If they’re safe, they’re able to pay attention and avoid collisions and get to the call. That’s important.”
The preemption tool was first installed across the area in November 2024 and will soon be implemented in about 200 intersections. Mackey said the project wouldn’t be possible without the support of city administration, IT and engineering professionals.
Because of mutual aid agreements, the new technology allows FFD to respond to calls faster all across Williamson County. FFD told News 2 if any surrounding agencies would like to learn more about the new technology to reach out to their department.
