Supermoons in 2025
In 2025, you can expect to see three supermoons. All three occur back-to-back months — Oct. 7, Nov. 5, and Dec. 4.
What is a supermoon?
More a popular term than a scientific one, a supermoon occurs when a full lunar phase syncs up with an especially close swing around Earth. This usually happens only three or four times a year and consecutively, given the moon’s constantly shifting, oval-shaped orbit.
Lunar Eclipses in 2025
Two lunar eclipses are set to occur this year. The first total lunar eclipse of the year takes place on March 14 with the second happening on September 7.
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon. This means the full rays of the sun are blocked by the Earth, causing the Earth’s shadow to darken the moon.
A total lunar eclipse means the whole of the moon gets cast in darkness.
Solar Eclipses in 2025
Two partial solar eclipses are expected in 2025 — March 29 and September 21.
What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Moon, and Earth line up, either fully or partially.
