NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Several families have been displaced following a fire in West Nashville Thursday.
Nashville firefighters were called to Hillside Condominiums at around 1 p.m. Thursday and found smoke billowing from the roof of Building C.
“The smoke and flames were billowing from the roof of this unit,” Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney said. “You could see the smoke and flames for a couple minutes away before approaching this structure.”
Dawn Eaton is a resident in the next building over.
“I kept hearing a noise that I thought was a nail gun — it was a popping sound. It kept going on,” Eaton told News 2. “Then I realized something else was going on and I looked out my sliding glass doors and saw the building on fire.”
“My first thought was, ‘Is it going to come over to my building? Is there any chance?'” Eaton said. “But of course, I saw all of the fire engines and realized that they would get it quickly contained.”
Eaton said she had checked in on her friends who live in the building.
“They’re devastated,” Eaton added. “And I’m sure it hasn’t even hit home yet.”
The Nashville Fire Department said everyone safely made it out of the building.
Two firefighters who were on their way to the scene were involve in a crash. They, and one civilian, were taken to the hospital for treatment. Their condition is not known at this time.
“We do want to remind people that as first responders are trying to get to incidents and have their lights and sirens activated, we ask that when they see the lights to move to the right so that everybody can be safe in that instance and make sure our first responders are able to get to these scenes,” Loney said.
The building will likely be a total loss; the Nashville Fire Department said the Red Cross was working to assist those affected by the fire.
“We did have someone report that they had two cats that were missing,” Loney said. “We were able to recover one of those pets and we are hopeful that we will find the other pet as well.”
