ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two students are dead and two are injured following a shooting at Antioch High School Wednesday morning, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD).
MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron said the Emergency Communications Center received a call at approximately 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 about shots fired at the school located on Hobson Pike.
Aaron said a 17-year-old boy armed with a pistol fired multiple shots in the school cafeteria, wounding two students before shooting himself in the head. Two school resource officers were in the building at the time of the shooting, but they weren’t in the immediate vicinity of the cafeteria.
According to Aaron, both the suspect and a female student died after the incident. The other student — who Aaron described as a female in the briefing but MNPD later described as a male in a social media post — sustained a graze wound to the arm but is stable at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Another male student was reportedly brought to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt with a facial injury that wasn’t from a gunshot.
MNPD’s SWAT team has cleared the building amid the investigation, which is being led by the department’s Homicide Unit, Aaron said.
A reunification site for parents has been established at 3754 Murfreesboro Pike. Buses have been taking students there, including car riders. Parents needing information regarding reunification can call 615-401-1712.
Hobson Pike is closed to traffic near the Wilson County line while a portion of Murfreesboro Pike is closed near the the scene, according to officials. Tennessee Department of Transportation HELP trucks have been dispatched to the area to help with traffic congestion.
An additional press conference about the shooting is planned for Wednesday, but authorities did not offer a specific time. News 2 will show that briefing live on air, online, and on social media.
