NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Last May, Governor Bill Lee signed the Protecting Children Against Social Media Act, which requires all social media companies operating in Tennessee to verify a user’s age and get parental permission for those under 18 to use their platforms.
Wednesday, Jan. 1, when the law is set to go into effect, News 2 tried to make an account pretending to be an underage user.

After setting the birthday to January 1, 2010 – which would make Wednesday the user’s 15th birthday – some social media platforms did not verify the user’s age or ask for parental permission.
The Protecting Children Against Social Media Act does not specify how social media companies are required to verify the ages of their users, only that they comply with the law.
