NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — With storms in the forecast for Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, it’s important to have a plan in place in case a tornado strikes.
Public information officer with the Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency, Bill Phillips, explained where the safest places in your home are.
“Below ground is best,” Phillips said. “An interior room is okay. That’s the safest place to be — an interior room on the lowest level of your residence. If you have a basement and can get to a basement, that is going to be the place to be. What we’re telling folks is to have that lined up and be ready to do what you need to do.”
However, because of rocky soil across Tennessee, most people don’t have a basement. That means an interior room — especially a small room like a closet, hallway or bathroom — is the best place to be otherwise.
A few examples of aerial views of damage after the March 3, 2020 tornadoes. Notice how the walls of smaller rooms that have their wooden frames that are closer together survived while the walls of larger rooms fell.
It is also a good idea to have an emergency kit in that location that includes first aid supplies, a flashlight, shoes, a helmet and a whistle.
