LEXINGTON, Tenn. (WKRN) — An investigation is underway after a man died Friday night following a shooting involving members of the Lexington Police Department.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said 26th Judicial District Attorney General Jody Pickens asked special agents to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 7, officials said law enforcement responded to a domestic incident in the 700 block of Natchez Trace Drive. A female exited the home, followed by a man, before gunfire reportedly erupted between the man and officers for reasons still under investigation.
The man — identified by the TBI as 40-year-old Robert Tate — went back into the home, where police later found him dead.
Meanwhile, one officer was hit by gunfire, but that officer was treated at a local hospital and released, according to law enforcement.
“TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events in the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration,” the TBI said in a statement on Saturday, March 8. “The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.”
No additional details have been released about Friday’s deadly shooting.
