NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Nashville man described a terrifying carjacking that happened at a Hermitage gas station as he was trying to get to work Thursday.
Christopher Barrington wasn’t injured in the encounter, but the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) is on the lookout for the two suspects and the stolen car: a white 2019 Honda HR-V LX.
Barrington said he was having a typical morning on his way to work when he stopped inside the convenience store for food and maybe a cup of coffee.
“I noticed the two kids standing out there in front of the 7-Eleven,” Barrington told News 2. “I didn’t think anything of it because there are apartments across the street, so I went on in and got my things.”
However, when Barrington came out of the store, those masked people started following him and eventually demanded his car.
“I got into the car thinking I could slam the door on them, but they had a hold of the door,” Barrington said. “And then I noticed one of them was holding a sharp object, which looked like a knife — it could have been a knife. It could have been a screwdriver. I don’t know. That’s when I was like, ‘Okay.'”
Barrington said his previous work experience helped him stay calm.
“I try not to be too fearful,” he said. “I drove Uber for ten years and overnights as well, so I have seen it all out there.
The suspects took the SUV and headed east on Lebanon Pike.
“It’s concerning to me because this is a very busy gas station that’s right across the street from a city park [and] a single-family neighborhood,” Metro Councilmember for the area, Jordon Huffman, said.
Huffman added that he thought the MNPD typically had an officer at the gas station at all times.
“I’m very surprised at the boldness of the perpetrators,” Huffman said. “…The precinct is just right down the road.”
As the search for the car — which Barrington said contained several things he needs for work — — continues, he said he would stay alert on his early morning stops.
