NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the deadline to apply for a REAL ID looms, the Tennessee State Library & Archives has offered support for some applicants.
Anyone seeking certified copies of their marriage records before 1974 can obtain that documentation through the Tennessee State Library & Archives as those documents can be used as proof of identification during the REAL ID application process.
According to the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security, you’ll need the following to get your REAL ID:
- Proof of citizenship or lawful permanent residency. To see what qualifies, follow this link
- Proof of your full Social Security Number.
- Two proofs of Tennessee residency. To see what qualifies, follow this link.
“The Library & Archives continues to serve as a valuable resource for those needing access to vital records,” Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. “We are proud to help Tennesseans get their REAL ID, and we urge those needing assistance to contact us today.”
All Tennesseans will be required to have a REAL ID, or other federally-approved ID, by May 7 to enter some federal buildings, military bases or nuclear plants. REAL IDs will also be necessary to board commercial flights within the U.S.
“The REAL ID deadline is rapidly approaching, and our staff is ready to support people needing their proof of identification documents,” State Librarian and Archivist Jamie Ritter said. “We have seen a significant increase in these types of requests, so we encourage customers not to wait until the last minute and to be mindful of processing times as they seek help from us.”
The Tennessee State Library & Archives warned that because there is an increased demand for records, the fulfillment time for some requests could be longer than normal. For help with historical records, you can email the Tennessee State Library & Archives or follow this link for more information.
