COFFEE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Several agencies responded to a “near disastrous” fire involving a truck carrying hazmat chemicals Tuesday.
According to the North Coffee Volunteer Fire Department, they — along with the Manchester Fire Rescue Department, the Coffee County Emergency Management Agency, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol — responded to a call at about 2:46 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 24 West near mile marker 103.
The truck was reportedly hauling a trailer carrying 2,300 pounds of nitrogen gas in ten separate tanks. The truck’s rear tires and brakes caught fire and eventually, the fire compromised the interior of the trailer. However, no chemicals were involved in the fire, nor were any released.
The North Coffee Volunteer Fire Department thanked other first responders “for their assistance in bringing this near disastrous situation safely under control.”
