NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Heavy rainfall over the weekend led to high waters in Mill Creek. Now, residents are left with trash-filled embankments at Whitsett Park.
According to the National Weather Service, Mill Creek reached a peak of 10.8 feet around 6 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. Water stayed below the flood stage of 14 feet, but that didn’t stop garbage from getting left behind.
Trash Kitties Nashville is leading a cleanup Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. Grabbers, gloves and trash bags will be provided.
Jake Hall, a Trash Kitties member, said their work typically makes a long-term difference too.
“When someone gets it clean it then usually remains clean, but when it’s dirty, people like to continue to place trash, it’s almost like it gives them permission,” said Hall. “It’s nice that we can kind of be that starting point for other people to see what is possible.”
Volunteers are asked to wear long-sleeved pants and shirts and close-toed shoes.
