PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is conducting an investigation into a shooting involving law enforcement in Putnam County early Monday morning after one person was injured.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), around 1:30 a.m., Algood Police Department (APD) officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop along Highway 111 on a Dodge car for speeding and swerving into other lanes. The vehicle reportedly refused to stop, prompting a pursuit that required assistance from PCSO.
During the pursuit, the Dodge driver allegedly pointed a gun at an APD officer, and the suspect’s vehicle rear-ended a deputy patrol car, the sheriff’s office said.
The Dodge driver reportedly drove into the median on Interstate 40 westbound near mile marker 295 and stopped. Both agencies reported officers and deputies then exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
According to PCSO, the suspect was “taken down and apprehended.” APD said the individual was injured and transported to Cookeville Regional Medical Center for treatment. No law enforcement officials were injured in the incident.
An investigation site has been established on I-40. No additional information was available as the investigation continues.
