NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — For the second time in two years, Metro Nashville Public Schools bus drivers were called upon to respond to a deadly shooting in Nashville.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, school bus drivers responded to campus after the deadly shooting inside Antioch High School to ferry children to a reunification area, just as they did on March 27, 2023 after the shooting inside The Covenant School.
On Monday morning, at least 20 bus drivers showed their support for the children whose lives they protect every day by participating in a convoy to Antioch High School.
Bus driver Amanda Peters said this morning’s convoy was to show they stand with Antioch, the students, teachers and faculty.
“We, the Antioch school bus drivers, want to make Antioch students know that we stand with you, we’re behind you, and we’re all going to be there for you. So we just wanted to let you know that our hearts are heavy for you but we’re there for you.”
Antioch students are expected to return to campus Tuesday. Bus drivers don’t have specific changes in place for tomorrow as students return to school under new security measures.
On the morning of March 27, the Metro Transportation Department sent at least nine buses to The Covenant School to take students away from the shooting scene. Bus after bus took kids to a safe, calm place where they could be reunited with their loved ones.
Metro Nashville Public Schools reported its bus drivers have evacuated Nashvillians during floods, fires and the 2020 bombing downtown. At the height of the pandemic, the big yellow school buses delivered school supplies, academic materials and food directly into neighborhoods.
