NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Black ice is one of the most dangerous parts of winter weather but what is it? It’s a thin, clear, layer of ice that accumulates on top of pavements and sidewalks.
This is a significant hazard because you can’t see it since it blends in with roads and appears black up close.
What this means for drivers is that this glaze can cause more accidents and decrease stop times when you hit the brakes.
How Black Ice Forms
The three ways it forms are heavy snowfall, rain sticking to roadways that are freezing and below, or freezing fog.
Friday’s weather event will create black ice on roadways due to snow falling, and refreezing as temperatures drop overnight into Saturday morning.
If you do have to drive on Saturday, stay alert because black ice can go unnoticed since it just makes roadways look wet or slick.
