NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Winter Storm Warning is in effect now across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. It started at midnight Friday and will last until 6 a.m. Saturday for Lincoln, Moore and Franklin Counties. The rest of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky are under the warning that started at 3 a.m. Friday and last until 6 a.m. Saturday.
It is a good setup for accumulating snow with cold air in place and a low-pressure center coming from the Gulf with lots of moisture. Snow is already covering Tennessee and will become heavier through the day.
Some short-range models are hinting, that we could see sleet mix in with the snow in our southern areas along the TN/AL state line. That would slightly lower totals there, but also add a layer of ice. The mix of precipitation would take place through the afternoon, if it happens.
The model below shows snow staying in place closer to the TN/ AL state line. This is more likely but sleet is possible.

Most of our area is looking at significant snow accumulation. We could see anywhere from 5 to 8 inches of snow and maybe more in a few spots. The only exception is far north in Southern KY and along the TN/AL where we could see that sleet mixing in. Those areas still would see 3 to 5 inches of snow. However, TN/AL area could have a layer of ice on top of the snow.
Everyone needs to get prepared now because travel is already being affected and streets will refreeze through the overnight hours, even after snow stops falling. This will last all weekend. If you don’t have to drive, please stay home.
