NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — All of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky are under a Winter Storm Warning starting Friday.
The warning for Lincoln, Moore, and Franklin counties runs from midnight Friday to 6 AM Saturday. The rest of Middle TN and Southern KY are under the warning from 3 AM Friday to 6 AM Saturday.
It is a good setup for accumulating snow with cold air in place and a low-pressure center coming from the Gulf with lots of moisture. However, the track of the low is key to this forecast. The snow will start first thing Friday morning.
However, if the track of the low gets closer to us like some short-range models are hinting, then we would see ice mix in with the snow in our southern areas. That would lower totals there, but also add a layer of ice. If that were the case, the higher totals would be near Nashville and areas north.
Snow totals could be highest along I-40 and to the north and south. We are expecting 3 to 7+ inches of snowfall possible areawide. This is because of the potential for mixed precipitation by the TN/AL state line.
If the precipitation changes from snow to sleet/freezing rain more moisture would be pushed northward meaning heavier snow in central and northern TN.
Everyone needs to get prepared now because travel will be affected on Friday and into the weekend. If you don’t have to drive, please stay home.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) has declared a state of emergency ahead of Friday’s snow.
