NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Being on a stunning campus can certainly add to the college experience. Some of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation are located in the Volunteer State, according to a new report from Condé Nast Traveler.
Condé Nast Traveler, a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, recently released a list naming the 54 Most Beautiful College Campuses in America.
The list, which features everything from 19-century-stone cottages to libraries with sky-high Gothic spires, had three Tennessee institutions rank among the top 54.
Vanderbilt University
Vanderbilt University’s campus in Nashville, Tennessee, serves as the “postcard-perfect backdrop.” The private research university, founded in 1873, offers 70 undergraduate majors and a full range of graduate and professional degrees.
Condé Nast praised the “blanket of pink and white flowers” along the university’s pathways. Extending along West End Avenue, the report also highlighted the food scene found right outside the campus gates.
The university features 31 residence halls, 18 dining locations and more than 450 interest organizations.
University of the South (Sewanee)
Located on the Cumberland Plateau, the University of the South, also known as Sewanee, claims a campus that sprawls over 13,000 acres.
In addition to 19 residence halls, the private Episcopal liberal arts college features a 21-mile hiking loop that drops through hollows and runs by waterfalls.
“Fans of dramatic architecture will fall in love with the Collegiate Gothic buildings, especially the All Saints’ Chapel. Right at the center of campus, the chapel’s gorgeous rose window can’t be missed,” wrote Condé Nast.
Rhodes College
Built in the heart of Memphis, Rhodes College’s campus is a “monument to stone buildings.”
According to the school’s website, the college was founded in 1848 in Clarksville, Tennessee. In 1925, the campus moved to Memphis; the original campus would later become Austin Peay State University.
The travel magazine highlighted stone buildings on the campus that wrap around the central quad, which are composed of stones in “different shades of warm, natural colors, making each facade appear like a mosaic baked in the Southern sun.”
