MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — First responders faced freezing temperatures while fighting a house fire in Murfreesboro Wednesday night that resulted in the deaths of several animals.
According to Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD), units responded to a home following reports of smoke coming from the front door on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
When crews got to the scene, they found heavy smoke throughout the residence, so they immediately began fire suppression efforts and searched the house, according to officials.
The MFRD said the homeowner evacuated safely before personnel arrived, but three dogs were still inside. Firefighters found and removed the animals, who did not survive.
Officials said the freezing temperatures “added to the hazards faced by firefighters during the incident.” After the blaze was extinguished, the Fire Marshal’s Office started investigating the cause of it.
According to the MFRD, the homeowner turned down help from the Red Cross and decided to stay with family following the fire.
No additional details have been released about Wednesday night’s incident, including the extent of the damage to the house.
